Address Autocomplete

Getting customers through a checkout should be quick and painless. Still, we all know how tedious it can be asking users to type out long addresses during registration or when buying products. Address entry is one of the spots users make mistakes or even give up. That’s why automating address input is a subtle but powerful way to boost the user experience.

Recently, we checked out the Address Autocomplete plugin from WPSunshine, featured in our InfluenceWP first look series. Our initial reaction? This plugin removes friction from address entry by integrating the familiar Google Address Autocomplete right into WordPress — across WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, LifterLMS, Paid Memberships Pro, and more.

Below, we walk through the plugin’s features, setup, and why it matters. To see the demo and real-time setup, watch our detailed review here:

What Is Address Autocomplete? Speed and Accuracy for WordPress Address Fields

Address Autocomplete is a simple, install-and-go plugin that connects your WordPress forms to the Google Address Autocomplete API. Instead of typing a full address by hand, users simply start entering their street and choose the correct suggestion from a dropdown. Every related field — like city, state, and ZIP code — fills in automatically.

Our favorite part? Once you enable it, your checkout, registration, and form users can finish address entry in seconds. Fewer typos mean fewer failed deliveries and far less customer frustration. It’s the little things that drive conversions and happy customers.

Supported Platforms

Right out of the box, Address Autocomplete integrates with many of the most popular WordPress plugins:

  • WooCommerce (checkout, my account pages, shipping, and billing)
  • Gravity Forms (address fields)
  • LifterLMS (purchases)
  • Paid Memberships Pro
  • Support for block-based and shortcode versions of popular forms

The developer mentions even more integrations on the way. We see this as a clear fit for almost any business running sales, memberships, or course platforms on WordPress.

Features and Functional Scope

The plugin’s core promise is effortless integration and high flexibility. Here’s a deeper breakdown of everything packed in:

Core Features

  • Works with Any Form on WordPress: Add address autocomplete to checkout, registration, user profile, or any custom form — no limits.
  • Supports All Common Address Fields: Standard fields like Address 1 & 2, city, state/province, zip/postcode, country.
  • Unlimited Usage: Use autocomplete on as many forms or fields as needed across one site.
  • Multiple Data Fields: Populate not only address fields but also latitude and longitude if needed.

Integrations and Compatibility

  • WooCommerce: Works for both block and shortcode versions of checkout and my account pages. Covers billing and shipping fields.
  • Gravity Forms: Supports address fields seamlessly.
  • LifterLMS: Integrates with purchase flows.
  • Paid Memberships Pro: Makes registration easier.
  • Other Forms: Setup is flexible for nearly any other third-party form plugin.

Advanced Features

  • One-Click Integration: Enable support for WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, or others in one check.
  • Country Restriction: Narrow address suggestions to up to five specific countries, which is useful for region-locked shops.
  • Page Restriction for JavaScript: Load plugin JavaScript only on selected pages (cart, checkout, my account, or others). This helps keep site performance high.
  • Custom Labels and Descriptions: Set admin labels for each instance to keep settings organized on complex sites.
  • Results Language: Choose the language for Google’s suggestions.
  • Custom Dropdown Title: Add a heading to the suggestion dropdown for clarity.
  • Load Delay: Set how long autocomplete waits to start, which can optimize performance on some setups.

Key Technical Capabilities

  • Unlimited instances for complex forms or multi-step registrations
  • Full compatibility with multiple data fields that may be unique to your business needs

The ease-of-use is clear. For a site admin or developer, the plugin takes away the need for custom code or expensive development hours every time you want smoother address input.

Website Navigation and Documentation Quality

To get started, we headed to wpsunshine.com, the home of Address Autocomplete. Navigation is simple: choose “Address Autocomplete” from the top navigation to land on the plugin’s main page.

While the website itself is easy for finding features and sign-up, two areas for improvement jumped out:

  • No About Page: Customers shopping for plugins want to see the team, their story, or client trust signals. A dedicated About page builds connection and credibility.
  • No Public Change Log: Version numbers, feature updates, and bug fixes―these help current and prospective buyers see a transparent development path. We suggest adding this both for trust and support.

On the plus side, the documentation is strong. It’s clearly organized by product, complete with annotated screenshots and a helpful video. For a technical tool like this, showing users step-by-step visuals is a big advantage. The docs hammer home the need to follow Google Places API instructions carefully, recommending the legacy API for stable results.

Website Structure Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Easy to find plugin details and feature lists
  • Solid documentation with images and clear, actionable steps

Cons:

  • Missing About page sharing team background
  • No public change log or release history

When plugins ask us to connect mission-critical things like Google APIs, having detailed guides (with screenshots and callouts) is a must — and WP Sunshine delivers here.

Installing and Setting Up Address Autocomplete: A Practical Walkthrough

We installed Address Autocomplete on a WordPress test site running WooCommerce. The entire process is simple but does involve a few technical steps, especially around Google API setup. Here’s how we did it:

Before the Plugin: The Manual Address Entry Frustration

Without the plugin, the WooCommerce “My Account” and checkout pages ask users to type every part of their address. There’s no help, no autocomplete, and every character has to be entered manually. That’s both slow and error-prone.

With Address Autocomplete installed, customers just start typing a street or business name. They pick the address from an instant dropdown, and every other field fills itself in.

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Install Address Autocomplete

  • Download and install the plugin from WP Sunshine.
  • Activate it in your WordPress plugins area.

2. Find Plugin Settings

  • The plugin settings live under “Settings” in the WordPress dashboard, not under WooCommerce.
  • Here’s where we enter our API keys and activate integrations.

3. Connect Google Maps API

This step is the only one that requires close attention, but the documentation lays out each detail.

  • Follow the plugin documentation to visit the Google Cloud Console and create a Google Maps API key. The plugin links to the official Google API Console.
  • Create a new project specifically for the address autocomplete functions.
  • Enable two APIs: Places API and Maps JavaScript API for your project.
  • Set up a billing method (Google requires one, even though most sites will fall within the free usage tier).
  • Optionally restrict your API key to your website domain under “HTTP referrers.” For better security, we suggest following the guide in the docs.

4. Enter and Save API Key

  • Copy your API key and paste it into the Address Autocomplete plugin settings in WordPress.
  • Save your changes.

5. Integrate with WooCommerce and Other Plugins

From the settings, we can:

  • Enable support for WooCommerce checkout and my account pages (as well as Gravity Forms, LifterLMS, Paid Memberships Pro).
  • Manage instance-specific settings: add descriptive labels, customize which address fields are covered, and more.
  • Control which pages load the plugin’s scripts. We recommend limiting to cart, checkout, and my account pages for best speed.
  • Choose the language for suggestions and set a custom dropdown title if desired.
  • Set restrictions for address suggestions by country.

6. Check Additional Options

  • Customize how data fills into fields (options for city, zip, state, etc.).
  • Add more address fields if needed, or set special selectors for advanced forms.
  • Configure load delay for script initialization if your site needs a timing tweak.

Setup Tips

  • When navigating Google Cloud, expect some UI changes not reflected in docs. Stick closely to instructions but be ready for small visual differences.
  • Restricting your API key is strongly encouraged, even if not required just to test the setup.
  • Take advantage of the supporting documentation for selectors and field mapping, especially for custom forms.

Setting up the plugin is a process we’d rate as straightforward for most WordPress professionals. DIYers may trip on Google’s ever-changing console, but following the plugin’s docs directly makes all the difference.

Testing the Plugin: Live Autocomplete in Action

After setup, we went through standard site flows to spot the plugin’s impact.

On the “My Account” page:
Editing billing or shipping addresses now triggers autocomplete as soon as we start typing. Select a result, and the rest of the address fields — city, state, zip, country — are filled instantly.

On the checkout page:
Entering an address is faster than ever. Autocomplete saves clicks, reduces typos, and ensures data is correctly formatted. We see this as a big win for both speed and accuracy.

Benefits Observed

  • Time saved: Users complete forms faster, meaning fewer abandoned checkouts.
  • Fewer errors: Pre-filled city, state, and postal code reduce support requests and failed deliveries.
  • Better conversions: Simpler experiences help move customers from browsing to buying.

One note from our experience — Google frequently updates their API console, leading to visual differences compared to documentation. This is not a fault of the Address Autocomplete plugin but is something to expect. We recommend plugin developers release updated video walkthroughs to keep onboarding smooth for everyone.

Final Thoughts

Address Autocomplete is a plugin that positively impacts the user experience for WordPress commerce sites and form-heavy setups. By making address entry nearly instant, it clears up a painful bottleneck that frustrates users and supports teams.

While Address Autocomplete has excellent documentation, the biggest challenge lies with Google’s constant updating of their processes, settings, etc., which can result in vendor documentation being slightly out of date. Just something to keep in mind as you go along.
