Let’s say you upgrade your WordPress version, and although you thoroughly tested everything, an issue pops up down the road, and the best resolution is to roll back WordPress core. This guide removes the hassle of manually rolling back WordPress, eliminating potential errors and saving time.
I recommend performing these steps in a Staging environment first to ensure your issues are resolved as part of this process. If you don’t have a Staging environment, at the bare minimum, back up your website.
Implementation
- Create a backup of your website
- Install and activate the free WP Downgrade plugin
- Settings > WP Downgrade
- In the WordPress Target Version box, enter the WordPress version you would like to roll back to. (Note: You can use the WP Releases link to find the exact version numbers available.)
- Save Changes
- Click Upgrade/Downgrade Core or Update Core
- Click Re-install Now
- Remove the WP Downgrade plugin
At this point, you should be on the core WordPress version known to fix your issue.
Be sure to test everything again thoroughly, and if any issues are discovered, you will have the backup created before starting this process.
