Build Brand Awareness With a YouTube Business Channel

Things to keep in mind:

    • Every environment (infrastructure, software, etc.) is unique, so there’s no universal approach to configuring a solution.
    • Review and understand all available settings, configuring them to the best of your ability, while not blindly guessing.
    • If a specific setting isn’t mentioned, the defaults are acceptable, or the settings are self-explanatory to any skill level.

Did you know YouTube is the second-largest search engine, next to Google?

This guide will teach you how to get your YouTube channel up and running for your brand so you can reach more customers.

YouTube Business Channel Setup

  1. Sign into your Google account
  2. Create a Brand Account
  3. Add your business name and click Create

Verify Your Account

While logged into your Google account, start the verification process and follow the instructions.

  1. Click on the default profile photo
  2. Upload your business logo (Note: Your logo should be 800 x 800 pixels for the best quality).
  3. Click on the cover image
  4. Upload a cover (photo, custom illustration, etc.) for your profile. (Note: For the best quality, your cover should be 2560 x 1440 pixels.)
  5. Click the plus icon at the bottom of the page
  6. Click Work contact info and fill in as much information as you’re comfortable sharing publicly (Note: The more info you’re willing to share, the better).
  7. Click the Hidden icon/link and set it to Visible
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 for Sites, adding your website, social media profiles, etc.

Customize Your Brand Channel

  3. Click your account icon in the top-right of your screen
  4. Click Your Channel
  5. Click Customize Channel
  6. Click Add Channel Art

  9. Click Select if you are happy with your image.

Configure Default Channel Settings

  1. Go to YouTube Studio
  2. From the left menu, select Settings
  3. Select defaults
  4. General > Specify your currency
  5. Channel > Basic > Enter any keywords (tags) you can think of that might need to be added to your videos, as it’s always easier to remove than to remember to add them. Also, set your Country. (Note: You can always go back and edit this list as things evolve with your business.).
  6. Upload Defaults > Essentials > Title > Use this setting to set up a template to know what to insert, using something like “[keyword/tag] Guide – How to [keyword/tag] using [keyword/tag]”
  7. Upload Defaults > Essentials > Description > Use this setting to set up a template so you know what to insert using something like “In this #[keyword/tag] video, we show you how to [keyword/tag] using #[keyword/tag] and [keyword/tag] to [keyword/tag].” Furthermore, include links to important areas of your website, social media links, and CTAs (Calls to Action). Here’s an excellent resource on how to write descriptions.
  8. Upload Defaults > Extras > Tags > You can put the same keywords/tags you used before, placing them under the Channel > Basic default settings.
  9. Upload Defaults > Advanced > Choose the Category and the Language that best fit most of your videos.
  10. Community > Defaults > Consider enabling all in this section to hold potentially inappropriate comments for review
  11. Other settings > Advanced channel settings > Advertisements > Disable
  12. Other settings > Advanced channel settings > Google Analytics > Add your tracking ID

Advanced Settings

  1. Within YouTube Studio, under the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab, fine-tune the not-so-sexy options for your video
  2. Comments > I like to allow comments but hold potentially inappropriate comments for moderation
  3. Category > Set an appropriate category for your video

Custom Video Thumbnails

A lot of advice suggests creating a custom thumbnail for every video. However, it’s not a rigid requirement, particularly if you’re just getting started. To start, you can simply create a custom thumbnail for each video category/topic.

Just do what’s best for your particular business while keeping your specific audience in mind. If you need help creating custom thumbnails, RightBlogger and Canva are great options.
